Myth #4- Moderate Drinking does you some good- This myth has been going around for quite some time now. The results of the studies that have shown that drinking alcohol is good for you were incorrect. The purpose of the study was to prove that non-drinkers did not live as long as people who drank moderately.

The group of non drinkers they put together comprised of past alcoholics and people that are not well enough to drink, so the results of the study went askew. How could the life expectancy of a former abusive drinker or a person not fit enough to be drinking in the first place be longer? The red wine theory is also quite deceiving since you need not drink wine to receive the benefits to your health that grapes has to offer. Alcohol also does not do you any good in the weight loss department, because it stimulates fat storage and muscle loss. Limu means (from Pukui & Elbert, 1986. Hawaiian Dictionary, page 207):
• A general name for all kinds of plants living under water, both fresh and salt,

Limu is the Hawaiian word for algae. It was the responsibility of women to gather limu in the tidepools while men would gather those kinds of limu that grew in areas of rough surf in the outer reefs. Limu is still enjoyed by Modern Hawaiians but has become increasingly difficult to find because of over-picking, pollution, and construction in watersheds. Many important kinds of limu grow best in brackish water where fresh water empties into the sea. Another threat to native Limu in Hawaii is the increasing spread of marine alien invasive species. Limu has been used traditionally in Hawaii as a food additive and condiment.

Many people who are looking to detoxify their body are looking towards juice fasting. A lot want to get rid of the toxins in their body so they can feel healthier. These toxins often make people feel sluggish and can affect the immune system. Any detoxifying or cleansing method such as juice fasting can help people to feel healthier and give them more energy. Juice fasting is good because it is easy to do and the fruits are readily available.

For a beginner to fruit juice fasting, it is very wise to initially start out slowly and to try it out for just one day. By juice fasting, you will be limiting your intake to juices only for a whole day. Fruit juice is high in simple sugars, so if you are a diabetic or have to monitor your sugar intake you should be careful before trying a fruit juice fast. Anyone embarking on a fasting plan should always consult with their doctor first. Also, do not fast on juice for prolonged periods of time, like more than 3 days, not unless your physician agrees that it is safe for you.

I have compiled some good recipes below which are great combinations of fruit and vegetables to get you started on your fast:

Recipe 1: This is a great drink with a combination of different vegetables. Three carrots, one celery stalk, two swiss chard leaves, a few sprigs of watercress, a celery stalk and half a beetroot. Wash, dice and juice is all that is needed. Quick and delicious.

Recipe 2: Again wash with distilled water, cut and put through the juicer three green apples, one carrot and a few fresh basil leaves. This is simple and one of my favorites.

recipe 3. To make a nice refreshing carrot juice with a little extra taste, take four carrots, a kale leaf, fresh coriander, mint, basil and a handful of dandelion leaves. Mic all together and juice.

Recipe 4:A simple peach juice by just adding two or three peaches into the machine.

There are many types of juices you can make to fast with. Some fasts recommend just fruit and others just vegetables. It does not really matter at the end of day. you will soon start discovering your own favorite combinations.

The regular person can get quite puzzled when it comes to food. We have all hear about vitamins and minerals, carbohydrates and sugars, antioxidants and fiber but how do they all fit together?

The macronutrients of protein, fat and carbohydrates are the central building blocks of all nutrition. We all require macronutrients to continue to exist. There are people who may favor one of another of the macronutrients but a wholesome, balanced diet has a good mix of all three.

The macronutrients are fat, protein and carbohydrates. They provide the calories our bodies need to live on. Carbohydrates and protein provide 4 calories per gram while fat provides 9 calories per gram. A calories is the measurement of the energy contents of food and it is in essence the sum of heat energy vital to raise the temperature of 1g of water 1 degree Celsius.

Because fat has more calories per gram than protein and carbohydrates it was long assumed that it must be the culprit behind the fat on our bodies. However, this justification proved to be way too simplistic. Fat on our bodies is caused by a number of diverse factors including eating too many total calories whether they are from fat or from protein and carbohydrates.

Protein is the most important of the three macronutrients because it is the building block of all of the tissues in our bodies. Protein can be found in meat and fish, dairy products and eggs and some excellent vegetarian sources such as beans and legumes and soybeans.

The major supply of energy for our bodies comes from carbohydrates. Carbohydrates switch to sugar in our bloodstreams, which is turn provides the energy that we need. Carbohydrates can be further broken down into simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates contain white sugar, white flour, candy, pastries and more. Complex carbohydrates include the whole grains and vegetables. Complex carbohydrates break down slowly in our bodies and give us continual energy while simple carbohydrates switch quickly to sugar causing sugar rushes and increased hunger later on.

Fat may be one of the most historically misunderstood of the macronutrients. Fat is certainly important to our bodies but there are good fats and bad fats. Good fats are the mono and polyunsaturated fats found in olive oil, peanut oil, canola oil and nuts and seeds, avocados and the acai berry. Bad fats are the “fake” fats formed from hydrogenation and the saturated fats found in animal products.

Macronutrients are the core construction blocks of all nutrition and the micronutrients, such as the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber are all found within the macronutrients.
